Top Christmas songs

Do They know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid

One of the most iconic Christmas songs going. This charity single organized by Bob Geldof came to life after watching a BBC documentary on famine in Ethiopia. There were many well-known artists on the track including Paul Young, Boy George, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, and Bono with choruses featuring more icons such as David Bowie, Phil Colins, Paul McCartney, Geldof & Ure.

All I Want for Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey

In terms of airplay Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the most successful Christmas song written after Bing Crosby’s 1963 hit “Do You Hear What I Hear?”. In December 2006 this became the first ringtone to achieve a RIAA Gold certification for sales of over 500,000. The next year the ringtone was certified Platinum for a million sales, then Double Platinum for a staggering 2 million sales in 2009.

Last Christmas – Wham!

Written and produced by George Michael, this song actually has very little to do with Christmas - it's about a failed relationship. Only the phase "Last Christmas," when the relationship comes to a head, refers to the festive season. Despite this, it has become a Christmas classic in the UK.

The song's music video was the last time that George Michael was filmed without a beard.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas – Michael Bublé

Michael Bublé covered the song and released it on his holiday album, Christmas. His version first entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated December 17, 2011. It has regularly charted in the UK during the festive period since December 2014.

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizzard

The team went above and beyond to really provide a Christmas feel to the classic with Engineer Steve Brown turning the air conditioning down to its coldest setting while Wizzard were recording the song to help create a wintry feel.

Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody” kept the Wizzard’s hit from going to no.1 so it was decided the song would be re-released in 1981 but despite this it never reached the same heights as it once did with 10th being its highest peak which came in 2019.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee

First released in 1958, "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" didn't dent the charts that year or the next, but in 1960, after Brenda Lee scored a few hits, it caught on and went to #14 in the US. It charted again in 1961 and 1962 and went on to become a Christmas classic.

Fairytale of New York – The Pogues

It is believed the writers had a desire to try and move away from the tacky Christmas songs and to highlight the fact that a lot of people have a terrible time at Christmas. The song is also inspired by the mass Irish immigration to America during the potato famine in the hope of making it as entertainers in New York. Many didn’t, however, and ended up homeless.

Driving Home for Christmas – Chris Rea

This perennially popular Christmas tune was originally recorded by Chris Rea in 1986, peaking at #53 on the UK single chart two years later. Since 2007, the song has re-entered the UK Top 75 each year around Christmas time as well as several other European country's listings.

Stay Another Day – East 17

It is understood that this Christmas classic from East 17 was not meant to be a Christmas song at all. A member of East 17’s song writing team, Tony Mortimers says the hit is actually an incredibly sad song which was inspired by his brother’s suicide.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! – Dean Martin

This was written by the lyricist Sammy Cahn and the Broadway songwriter Jule Styne in 1945. With Dean Martin’s version being one of the best-known versions. Although this song is associated with Christmas, there is no mention of the holiday in the lyrics. It's about making the most of a snowy day by spending it with a loved one by the fire.
